Comparison Essay - Rewrite

Football and relationships…now most people would not find any comparison between the two, but for me the comparison is easy. I am a huge football fan (some might even say fanatic) and I think at times I have a relationship not only with my boyfriend but also with the New England Patriots. I love both of them (sometimes one more than the other – not saying which) and at times they both create the same feelings in me. So most of the time whether I am talking about a New England Patriots football game or my relationship with my boyfriend, you could substitute one name for the other and still get the same statement. They both can excite me, make me happy and at times stress me to the max.

One way they are the same is that they both can be very stressful. Watching the New England Patriots play a tough nail-biter of a game is stressful. It makes me upset to my stomach, makes my hands sweat, and at times I have to cover my eyes. On the same note, my relationship has been stressful at times too. For instance, recently my boyfriend was having some trouble at work and that created some stress in our relationship. When this was happening, I had those same feelings…upset stomach, sweaty hands, and wanting to go bury my head because I didn’t know what to say. Thankfully though this is not the norm for my relationship whereas it is for most of the New England Patriots games, right to the end nail-biters and win it by a field goal.

Another way they are both similar to me is I love the New England Patriots and when it is football season I cannot wait until Sunday, it is definitely my happiest day of the week. My feelings for my boyfriend are the same, I love him and when I am with him I am definitely the happiest. He recently was away on a golfing trip for a week and the whole week he was gone I just kept waiting for the day he would be back. When that day came and I went to the airport, I was so excited to see him I had butterflies in my belly. That is the way football season is too, I count the days until Sunday and then just before the game I get that same nervous belly feeling.

And last but certainly not least, they both can generate heart-pounding excitement. When the Patriots play, I love the physical part of the game. My favorite player is a defensive player and I just love it when they sack the other team’s quarterback. When you know the team is going to make that big physical play, your heart is pounding so hard from all the excitement you think it is going to come right out of your chest. My relationship is the same the physical aspect is the best. When he just reaches out and holds by hand or taps me on the butt when he walks by, it still makes my heart race and if you don’t have that in a relationship how boring it would be. The same with football, if there wasn’t a physical aspect to the game, it would be pretty boring to watch.

I love watching football no matter how stressful it is and I will continue to count days until game time (131 days till kickoff) and the more physical the better, as long as no one gets hurt. I love my relationship too no matter how stressful it is, I will always want him around and definitely the more physical the better. Hard to believe we have been together almost five years and he still makes me feel like I have butterflies in my belly. Hopefully it will always be that way with him and with football!

A New England Patriots football game is very similar to being in a relationship. I love watching the New England Patriots and I love my relationship with my boyfriend and to me they both are very similar.

Being a single mom, my fourteen year-old son is everything to me. There is nothing I like more than to see his face light up because I have made him happy. That is why on several occasions I have been know to “bend over backwards” just to see that reaction. Here are some examples of what I have done to make my son happy.

It was a year ago November and Nintendo was releasing their new platform, the Nintendo Wii, and this was all my son had talked about for months…How awesome this system was going to be, all the cool things you could do with it and how it was all he wanted. It was being released on November 19th and I remember that people had started lining up on Friday, November 17th, and I thought there is no way I am going to be able to get one. Well on Saturday I happened to be at Wal-Mart in Brewer around 1:00 in the afternoon and there was no line outside, so I thought maybe they are lined up down by layawy. I went down to layaway and they had 20 folding chairs sitting there and 11 of them were already taken. One of the people told me that if you were sitting in one of the chairs at midnight, you would be able to purchase a Nintendo Wii. So guess what I did, I sat. I told my boyfriend that I was staying put, so there I sat for over 11 hours in that folding chair. It was uncomfortable and miserable, but when I was able to give my son that Wii for Christmas, it was all worth it.

Last December we heard Van Halen was going to be going on a reunion tour in 2008 and one of the dates was going to be in New Hampshire. He told me that was all he wanted for his birthday was tickets and how Eddie Van Halen was his idol and that they shared the same birthday. I told him there was no way we would be able to get tickets and also that I couldn’t afford them with all the money I had spent on Christmas. But he was downstairs at 10:00 a.m. on the Saturday they went on sale, so I thought what the heck I might as well try. I logged on to Ticketmaster and sure enough there were 3 tickets available at $100 each, so I hit purchase knowing this was going to be another one of those times his face would light up. On his birthday, January 26th, I gave him a Van Halen Greatest Hits CD and a Van Halen DVD. When he opened the DVD and saw the ticket, he couldn’t believe it. He was beaming and looking at me asking me how in heck did I get the tickets. Again, it was worth every penny.

My son graduates from eighth grade this year and he told me that for graduation he wanted to go to Florida and go back to Universal Studios. So I thought, how can I make this trip great? Well I have booked our trip. We leave on Saturday, June 14th, 4 days after graduation. When we arrive in Florida, I have arranged for a car to pick us up at the airport and take us to Universal Studios. I have booked four nights accomodations at one of the Universal Properties, length-of-stay passes to both parks, ride express to all rides, meal passes and to top it off tickets to see The Blue Man Group. When I told him this was booked and that we were going, he was so excited. I am sure this trip will always be special for both of us.

Now some may say all of this is a little excessive, but for me it is not. I didn’t mind sitting in an uncomfortable chair for 11 hours, or spending $300 on concert tickets, or purchasing a trip to Florida for the two of us because in the end there is nothing more important to me than making him happy. The best part of all of it is that he is a great kid and he appreciates all I do. He never ends a conversation with me (even when he is mad) without telling me he loves me. How great is that? He is the best!

Over the years, I have had several jobs with all different kinds of bosses, but it is in my current job that I think I have found my best boss. Some might say, what makes a good boss? I think the answer to that question is different for everyone. For me, it is the following things that make my boss great.

The first thing that makes her a great boss is she doesn’t “micro-manage.” She has the confidence in me that I know what needs to be done and that I will get it done. If she needs something sooner, she simply tells me. Like last week she needed me to put together a binder for a meeting, when she gave me the work, she just said “I need that for my 7am meeting on Friday.” She didn’t keep hounding me by asking, “Do you have it done yet?” or keep reminding me by saying, “Don’t forget, I need that binder by Friday.” She knew that she gave me an assignment and that I would have it done.

The second reason she is a great boss, is she makes sure she gives credit where credit is due. On numerous occasions, I have prepared presentations or training materials that she has used and she always makes sure to tell people “Trish did that.” For example, I prepared a Basic Computer Needs Assessment Test. This test determines people’s knowledge with computers and helps us determine if they need an intro to computers class. Recently, someone asked her if they could use it at another hospital and she told them that would be fine but to make sure and give me credit for developing it. She also makes sure that her boss knows how much I do and that I am always willing to step in when needed, like when I help with orientation for new employees.

The third reason that she is a great boss, is she is understanding. She realizes that there are days that you just don’t feel like working or that come 2:00 on a Friday afternoon most people have just about had it. She understands this and freely admits that she feels this way too. I think she realizes that on most days we put out a tremendous amount of work, so on those days that we don’t it is okay because she feels that “it all comes out in the wash.”

It is because of all these reasons that I love my job at St. Joseph Hospital and believe it or not, I love going to work. My boss makes my work environment a fun place to be. We accomplish a tremendous amount of work, but we almost always have fun doing it. This is very important because I feel that we spend more time with the people we work with than we do our own family sometimes. So if you don’t like what you do and where you are working, you need to change something, because life is too short!

I have been a lifetime member with Weight Watchers since 1987 and even though my weight has fluctuated over the years I have never forgotten the basic fundamentals of how the program works. When I think about what it takes for me to stay on track, there are three factors that make the program work for me.

Food, food, food. That is the first thing anyone thinks about when they go on a so-called “Diet.” I like to tell people that for me Weight Watchers isn’t a diet, it is a way of life. Weight Watchers offers two food plans, the Flex and the Core. While both plans are good, I personally prefer the Flex Plan because it allows you to eat anything you want and there are days that I still want pizza and ice cream.

Exercise, exercise, exercise. That is the second thing people want to know about when you are losing weight. How much exericise you do? What kind of exercise you do? This part wasn’t always easy for me, but believe it or not, I actually enjoy exercise now. The best part about exercising when on Weight Watchers is the more you do and the higher the intensity level, the more points you earn. Which in turn means the more food or beer you can have. For me, when Saturday and Sunday come around, I know that I am working out for at least an hour. A one hours workout for me at a high intensity earns me 6 points, which in turn means 3 lite beers.

Support, support, support. I think to be successful at anything whether it be dieting or getting through a tough time in life, you need to have the support of friends, family, etc. I love attending the weekly meetings at Weight Watchers. I have made some great friends! They have been there to congratulate me after a successful week and to help keep me on track after a difficult week. We exchange ideas, recipes and how we are feeling on the so-called Weight Loss Journey.

I went back to Weight Watchers in February of 2007 because I was 7 pounds over my lifetime goal weight. For me personally, I still enjoy my pizza, ice cream and my lite beer. I just make sure it fits in my plan for the day. I also have become interested in running and attend weekly meetings 2-3 times per month. Since going back to Weight Watchers, I have lost 20 pounds and been successfully maintaining my weight for over a year. I also was instrumental in starting a Weight Watchers at Work Program at my place of employment last June, which is still currently running. There is nothing I like more than going to the weekly meetings, seeing people succeed and helping them on their own weight loss journey with information I have learned by being successful on the program.

Division Essay

I have been a lifetime member with Weight Watchers since 1987 and even though my weight has fluctuated over the years I have never forgotten the basic fundamentals of how the program works. There are three main parts to Weight Watchers and none of them will work alone. In order to be successful at the program, you have to incorporate all three of the following parts into your everyday life.

The first and main part of the Weight Watchers program is choosing which food plan you are going to follow. There are two approaches to making wise food choices, one is the Flex Plan and the other is the Core Plan. The Flex Plan you can learn to eat healthy and enjoy the freedom to eat any food you like. On the Flex Plan every food has a POINTS value. You can eat any food you like, as long as you keep track of POINTS values and stay within your personal daily POINTS target. Your personal daily POINTS target is determined by gender, weight, age, height, and activity level. On the Core Plan you choose from a list of wholesome and nutritious foods, without tracking. The Core Food List is composed of foods from all food groups – whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish and dairy. With this plan there is no need to measure or count.

The second part to being successful at Weight Watchers is to incorporate exercise into your daily life. Weight Watchers breaks activity into four stages – Starting Out, Building Up, Ramp Up and Keep Going. By doing this anyone can increase their current activity level. The best part about doing more activity is you earn Activity POINTS based on the number of minutes you exercise and the intensity level of the activity. For example if I run for 45 minutes, based on my current weight, I earn 4 POINTS. Those points get added to your daily POINTS target, if you are on the Flex Plan or can be used for those extra items, not on the Core Food List, if you are following the CORE Plan.

The third and final part in being successful at Weight Watchers is to attend your weekly meetings. I know a lot of people turn their nose up at this part, but in my mind it is very important in losing weight and keeping the weight off. The people working at the meetings have all lost weight with Weight Watchers and become lifetime members, their knowledge and experience is invaluable. The feedback and information discussed in the weekly meetings will help you to be successful. Think of the meeting as a community of people helping each other through a series of steps. They are there to congratulate you for doing well and also understand when you have a week that was difficult. It is proven that people who attend meetings lose three times more weight than those who go it alone.

I went back to Weight Watchers in February of 2007 because I was 7 pounds over my lifetime goal weight. For me personally, I follow the Flex Plan because I like being able to have anything I want to eat, which includes ice cream and pizza. I also have become interested in running and attend weekly meetings 2-3 times per month. Since going back to Weight Watchers, I have lost 20 pounds and been successfully maintaining my weight for over a year. I was also instrumental in starting a Weight Watchers at Work Program at my place of employment last June, which is still currently running. Graf #10

When I first thought about my research history, I thought I don’t have any experience with research because I have never had to write a research paper. But then I realized that I have a lot of experience with research. I remember that when I found out I was pregnant, I bought books and read everything I could read on pregnancies. I wanted to know how I should be feeling, what I should be feeling, and everything that was going on with my body. Then when I had my son, I bought books on what to expect. There was one for infants, one for toddlers, and so on. I researched. I wanted to know what he should be doing, how much he should be eating and sleeping and when he got sick, I had to know what I should do. So up to this point in my life, I have researched a lot of things…buying a car, changing careers, buying a home, making investments, etc. All of my research has come from the internet, books or magazines. Most recently, I have been doing some online searching on what causes a low white blood cell count, as this is something my son has. So I guess this “Graf” has taught me that research isn’t just about writing a paper, it is about finding information on something that interests you.
